Me at two and me at ?? years of age!

Well, I have been riding bikes a long time and posted the picture to prove it! I am still riding and am riding in my 7th BP MS 150. Despite my age and lessening short term memory, I can remember the number of rides because it is the same number as the second digit in my age! Last summer I met up with some great friends from my past and was amazed at what they remembered! I guess I should have been paying more attention - that's it - right? Can I really be losing my mind so young?...or just bits of it?

My plan is to keep exercising and stimulating my brain and keep riding in the BP MS 150! My long term goal - ride with my grandson when he is old enough! He is now 5 months old, so 10 years and counting. He is a native Colorodoan (?) and so will be an experienced mountain biker, snow boarder, etc and will have no problem with the few miles between here and Austin.

Off to la la land...

A cold and icy day in February!

A cold and icy day in February! It's time to jumpstart my training. Some of you may say that I am a little late; but-alas, I have actually been cross-training and going to spin class! We had a 60 degree day last week and I rode hard and fast and it felt GREAT! Tomorrow is supposed to warm up and I will try for a long slow ride (LSDistance)- saddle time. Keep me honest-check back tomorrow!

A Great Ride; BP MS 150 2010

I had a great ride! All the worry of a cold winter, not enough training, and just being older was for naught!

The weather was great! The start was great! The people were great! And, last but not least....

Team Hess riders and volunteers were stellar. The volunteers surpassed themselves; as if that is possible - but...Oh! It is! They worked hard at every stop; meeting our every whim. I think the volunteers need a spa day - they worked so hard. I felt guilty taking advantage of all the hospitality when all I had to do was ride a bike. Something I love to do (no matter how much I worry about it).

A BIG thank you to all of the wonderful people who donated to BP MS 150 in my behalf. This was the best year yet and I thought that it couldn't get any better than last year. Hmmm...I appreciate the confidence you had in me, even when I was really feeling worried.

So, now to a transition training schedule. I will do more cross training this year. All I have to do is ignore a muscle for a week and it is GONE! So, keep checking my blogs and keep me honest about how many push-ups I can do - five???? Ha!

Thank you again to ALL!

Catch-up from MS 150 blog!

Slow starts this spring, but making up training time as fast as I can!
A Good Weekend for training! What a good training weekend. All I had to do was wait till the warmer air in the afternoon. I rode Friday, Saturday, and Sunday! It doesn't get any better than this. Go Team Hess! As we keep moving so they can too.

I skipped spin class....I skipped spin class Wednesday night, in lieu of the real thing! The sun came out and even though' it was only 50 degrees; I went out and got a fast short ride in. And really fast it was - you get warmer that way! By the time I got to my "mini-hill" and the stiff headwind I was huffing and puffing and hungry... Remember the banana next time! An excellent ride all told.

Spinning is no substitue for the real thingWhile I am enjoying spinning class more than I have in the past...Hmmmm...Well, what that really means is that it is tolerable now. Instead of saying to myself; "I hate spinning, I hate spinning." I am saying "This is really good for me. This is really good for me." And, the bottom line is that no matter how much I love being in a real bike saddle, I cannot make myself go out in weather less than 50 degrees!!! I know my friends on the east coast have no sympathy for me right now, but I DON'T CARE! I want to be warm and warm I am in spin class! So off I go to spin class tonight! OK, so the trainer is still in the garage

OK, so out comes the trainerThe weather! The weather! The weather! Hmmmm....I am going to get the trainer out this weekend. It is Feb. 4th and cold in Houston. Sounds normal right? But, not for me and the last couple of years in Houston. The good news is that I have been lifting weights since last summer and am considerably stronger - working on that core! Soooo.....All is not lost.....and good weather is predicted for this weekend!Off I go!

Am I really here again????Yes, I am really here again - desperatly looking for warm weather, spare time, and that "perfect training". Hmmmm....I have been out twice in the past two months - not a good start. I want sun, +57 degrees and daylight! Maybe I want too much! Must re-evaluate my "perfect training" dream if I want to be ready! Keep checking and keep me honest! Thank you for your support.

More training!....

Well, I rode last week - only twice - on a mountain bike in Colorado - visiting my daughter and helping her in her new home. I did get in 150 miles the week before and they felt great! But, going from 100 to 150 hard riding miles in one week was a little too much for my knees. I now have "runners knee". The good news is that the cure for "runners knees" is cycling! Well, I can do that, but must add more stretching!

Off to a good week in Texas and home to my road bike. Just hope those thunder storms are well placed in the day and do not interfer with the much needed training!

My First Bike! and the Gator Ride

OK, I was 2 1/2 and my sister (5 1/2 years older than me) was tired of me trying to ride her bike!

Training:

Rode in the Gator Ride this weekend and it was great..... The first part was the Fred Hartman Bridge and it was a piece-of-cake! I thought "WOW", this is going to be an easy 40 miles! Yes, I only set a goal of 40 miles for Saturday! Well.... the first 20 miles were great - 20+ tailwind. Yes there is a price to be paid for such a luxury - 20 miles with a 20+ headwind. Things were not so great. I was peddling as hard and fast as I could! I looked down at my speedometer and lo and behold - I was only going 13 miles per hour! I finished and that is all I am saying about that!
